Horses were our first love. Groton City Animal Hospital started as a large animal practice back in 1998, and equine care has been at the heart of what we do ever since. Today, our team includes multiple veterinarians with equine experience, and we provide ambulatory care for horses throughout Tompkins County, Cortland County, and the surrounding areas. From routine wellness to pre-purchase exams, we’ve got you covered.
Our Equine Services
We offer a full range of equine veterinary services, all available on-farm. Please consult our farm and large-animal service area map to determine whether you are within our service area.
Wellness & Preventative Care
Routine care is the foundation of a long, healthy life for your horse. We offer comprehensive wellness exams that go beyond the basics — we want to know about your horse’s diet, workload, lifestyle, and overall history. Preventative services include vaccination programs, deworming protocols, fecal screens, and Coggins testing.
Dental Care
Dental health plays a major role in your horse’s comfort, performance, and nutrition. We perform routine dental floats to address sharp enamel points, uneven wear, and other common dental issues. Regular dental exams help us catch problems early, before they start affecting your horse’s eating habits or behavior under the saddle.
Diagnostic Imaging
When something isn’t adding up, imaging helps us get answers. We offer on-farm digital radiography (X-rays) to evaluate lameness, hoof problems, joint issues, and other conditions. Portable digital equipment means we can get high-quality images right in your barn without the stress of trailering.
Pre-Purchase Exams
Buying a horse is a big investment — emotionally and financially. Our pre-purchase exams give you a thorough, honest evaluation of a horse’s overall health, soundness, and suitability for your intended use. We’ll walk you through our findings so you can make a confident, informed decision.
Coggins Testing
A current negative Coggins test is required for most travel, sales, and events in New York State. We offer Coggins testing on-farm so you can stay current without the hassle.
Equine Care Built on Experience
We didn’t add equine services as an afterthought — it’s where we started. Our veterinarians understand horses, and we understand horse people. Whether you’ve got a competitive show horse, a trail horse, or a retired pasture buddy who still expects their daily peppermints, we treat every horse as an individual. We take the time to listen, answer your questions, and make sure you feel good about the care your horse is receiving.
