Camelids are unique animals — and they deserve a veterinary team that understands their unique needs. At Groton City Animal Hospital, our veterinarians have pursued additional training in camelid medicine and surgery, and we’re proud to be a trusted resource for alpaca and llama owners throughout Tompkins County and the surrounding areas. Whether you’ve got a fiber herd, a few guardian llamas, or a handful of pasture pets, we’re here to help keep them healthy.
On-Farm & In-Hospital Care for Alpacas and Llamas
We can provide ambulatory veterinary services for alpacas and llamas, which means our team comes to you. Services are performed on-farm or in our hospital — whatever makes the most sense for you and your animals. Please consult our farm and large-animal service area map to determine whether you are within our service area. Services we offer include:
Herd Management
Keeping a healthy herd starts with a solid plan. We offer consultations covering vaccinations, deworming protocols, internal parasite control, BVD testing, and routine blood screening. Whether you’re managing a large production herd or a small backyard group, we’ll work with you to develop a wellness program that fits.
Reproductive Services
From breeding to birth, we’re here to support your herd’s reproductive health. Our reproductive services include diagnostic ultrasound for pregnancy confirmation and infertility evaluation, uterine infusions, and hormone manipulation.
Cria Care
Those first hours and days matter. We offer IgG testing for newborn crias to evaluate whether they’ve received adequate immunity from colostrum. If a cria is diagnosed with Failure of Passive Transfer (FPT), we can provide prompt treatment to give them the best possible start.
Surgery
We perform routine surgical procedures on-farm, including castrations and hernia repairs. Our veterinarians are experienced in camelid-specific surgical considerations to keep your animals safe and comfortable.
Dental Care
Camelid dental care is an often-overlooked part of herd health. We provide fighting teeth trimming and incisor trimming to help prevent injuries and keep your animals eating comfortably.
Imaging
When we need a closer look, we offer radiographic services either on your farm or at our hospital. Digital X-rays help us quickly evaluate injuries, dental issues, and other conditions that aren’t visible from the outside.
